Sound really is the fifth actor in this show. Weaving between diegetic and not, the characters interact on the sound effects to fully complete the story: birds overhead, musical stings, trains barreling through tunnels, violent rain storms bursting through doors all create a cinematic experience for the audience as Hannay escapes the police. The theatre is rich a landscape of musical fun.
"THANKOOO!"
"More than 200 sound cues were perfectly timed to add applause, crowd noise, airplanes, machine gun fire and birds that caused the planes to crash."

"What are the 39 steps?"
The audience gets to hear the pilots whizzing above them in a plane chase, the shots ricocheting around the theatre walls, the comedic and action packed shadow sequences, the noir themes of the 30s and Hitchcock films are woven throughout. With over 200 sound cues, nearly 90% of the show is underscored or steered by the sound design.
"So that's the sad story of my life. Richard Hannay. Irredeemable. Irreclaimable. Unreformable."
It was very important that the sound system both remain humble, avoiding being overstated or noticeable while also allowing for huge action sequences. It was very clear that "technology" should not be present in this show, avoiding any noticeable amplification of the actors, and still maintaining a level of cohesion between sound effects or music along with natural voice and scene. The design is very much a character that must not upstage the others.
From early discussions with the creative team and Craig Beyrooti (Sound Designer), we knew we needed a surround system, with QLab currently lacking in the spatial design section, we got imaginative with the installation of a TiMax rig. Along with a 20 speaker system-- including an 8-piece surround system, two area microphones hidden in the set, and a TiMax system, we were able to quickly program the thousands of sound elements into QLab for precise playback. Totaling upwards of $250,000, this system was a massive treat to work on.
